Postgraduate Opportunities in Veterinary Science
Why undertake advanced study in Veterinary Science?
Humans interact and impact on animals every day. It is the responsibility of everybody to ensure that these animals are well cared for. The day-to-day care of animals is in the hands of animal care-givers, animal owners and veterinarians. However, the techniques and tools that these people use must continually be improved. This is the function of those who undertake advanced study in veterinary science. Those who undertake advanced studies will typically be employed either by agencies with a research focus or hospitals with responsibility for specialist care of animals.
Areas of Activity and Strength:
Massey University has the only veterinary school in New Zealand. The Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences (IVABS) staff have a wide range of expertise. IVABS provides research that is cost-effective, integrative applied research to internationally recognised quality standards (such as Good Laboratory Practice standard). The principal research programmes include food safety and quality, spatial epidemiology, veterinary pathology, comparative physiology and anatomy, emerging diseases, wildlife health and conservation, reproductive management and diseases, locomotion and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, mycobacterial diseases, nutritional management of animal production and diseases.
Our postgraduates experience strong staff commitment via well-structured, cross-disciplinary programmes including the world's best postgraduate training in epidemiology and pastoral agriculture.
We believe in continuing professional education and IVABS is committed to learning as a life-long journey. We deliver relevant, customer-focussed programmes in a flexible manner for the animal health and agricultural industries. Our Veterinary Teaching Hospital offers a first opinion service for the animal-owning public. The Hospital's internationally-recognised specialists also provide secondary and tertiary referral services for veterinarians dealing with difficult animal health problems. The diverse expertise of our staff is regularly harnessed by private companies or Government agencies (both national and international) via consultancy agreements.
