Biographical Information
John obtained his BSc (Hons) at Massey University and was then awarded a Rutherford Memorial Scholarship for PhD studies at Bristol University in the laboratory of Professor Brian Follett. He returned to New Zealand in 1984 to establish a comparative endocrinology laboratory for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. In 1989 John moved to Massey University to join the Department of Physiology and Anatomy. He has conducted endocrine studies with a range of species including the kakapo, North Island brown kiwi, Adelie penguin, yellow-eyed penguin, grey duck, mallard, house sparrow, Japanese quail and chicken. In 1998 John initiated the field of conservation endocrinology and established the Conservation Endocrinology Research Group. He is now enjoying the challenge of guiding postgraduate students and fostering local and international collaborative research projects in conservation endocrinology.
